We've landed...

The alarm went off at 3:45 am! After only going to bed after midnight, that came early.
The goal was to leave at 5 am in order to be at the airport by 6:30. Worked out pretty well. Jacki came along to drive our car home. She did sleep all the way in, but it was early for a 20 something ;-)
I think having grey hair helps. The minute we walked in to the Air Canada area, an attendant assisted us with our check in etc etc. After dropping the luggage on the conveyor, it was off to  security and the pat down. Pat down, body scan, x-ray the carry on, it's quite the ordeal. Didn't I say I had grey hair? I guess they don't care. It wasn't that bad. The personnel we had were pretty polite.
I was surprised at the seats on the plane. They were tight all right, but I had decent leg room. I was a little concerned about that after the sardine can that took us to Mexico a couple of years ago.
We had a stop in Toronto, but not for long. Again, lots of help directing us to the right gate. All in all, it was pretty relaxed.

It was relatively clear most of the way, but we did have a few interesting cloud formations along the way. I've always loved the blue tone the sky gets the higher the flight goes.

Flight to TO, approx 2 hrs, flight from TO to St John's, approx 3 hrs. Cloud and drizzle when we landed, but we kind of expected that. Wasn't particularly cold. Mid teens. Again, lots of help getting our rental car and directions to our first B&B.

Speaking of which...

we are on the top floor of this corner unit. Beautiful character home. I posted a couple of pics on Instagram and Facebook. Very steep stairs LOL. Makes taking the luggage up a little tough for a guy with bad knees. Our hostess is a real card. She reminds me of a cheeky character on a British sit-com.

After getting settled we explored Water St and found a place on George St to have a bit to eat.
George St is lined with restaurants and pubs with live music and great atmosphere. A must to check out if you ever come this way.

We stopped at a place called Greensleeves. Basically, you just follow the music. Perhaps it's because it was Saturday night, but kind of a nice feel.

This first guy seemed to know everyone. He could stop mid song and greet people then jump right back where he was and keep going. Very relaxed.

As you can see, there was an assortment to choose from. We tried a local brew called Black Horse. Quite good.

This guy came up from the crowd, seemed to know the first guy, and just took over for a few songs. He was even better than the first guy. Real personable and interacted with everyone there. Truly that whole "kitchen party" feel associated with the Maritimes.

The following pix gives you a bit of an idea of the types of buildings in the area. Very hilly for a prairie boy. Probably a good thing, need to walk off the great food we keep seeing here.

Well, that's it for now. More exploring tomorrow.

  1. Cool. No more complaining about those knees at work if you can make it to the top of that place. Holidays wonderful things aren't they.
